2011 Holiday Wrap Up!

The holidays have come & gone & so has the year 2011.

I overall had a good time this holiday season. I spent time with my loved ones & my dude. Oh, & of course, my cat, Xiu Xiu. However, I am happy that it's all over because the holidays were stressful this year. I didn't particularly like being broke, & not being able to buy more presents for my family. Nor did I like not having a tree for the first Christmas in our house.

Oh well, hopefully the world doesn't end this year, & I get a chance to make up for all of it this Christmas.

Here are a few photos from my holiday season:

The first Christmas presents I received were from my bestie, Jackie.

I spent Christmas Eve at my MIL's house, but I didn't take any photos. I really wasn't in the mood. I had a nice time, but honestly, I just wanted to sleep the whole day away.

On Christmas Day, which is also my Grandpa's birthday, I spent it with my family. The dude & I packed up the car with booze & gifts & headed to my mom's house. It was a nice time with my mom, step-dad, grandparents, sister, nieces & nephew, my mom's BFF, & the dude. We ate lots of good food & watched TV. We also cut a cake for my Grandpa & sang Happy Birthday to him. Good times, indeed.

Not Pictured: candy that I ate the next day.

My mother bought me practical stuff, which I asked for: towels, a plush blanket, an apron, a cookie sheet, & various other things.

Friends, Family, Fate, Forgiveness, & Forever: An Ode To My First Mister

It's very hard for me to explain my love for My First Mister.

It's a love that's infinite & strong. A love that simply cannot be summoned up into words, but is solely based on emotions & feelings. Maybe a warm blanket & a lonely heart? Who knows!

I was fortunate enough to see it in the theater upon its release, & I fell in love with it. I left the theater crying & clutching at my chest. I was so moved, that I could hardly speak. I just sat in the car silently sobbing & feeling like an idiot. It was definitely moved into my "Favorite Films Ever!" list promptly.

My First Mister is the story of Jennifer / J, a social misfit (or so they say) who spends most of her time alone. She does not relate to her mother, her classmates, her father, or anyone, really. The only connections she seems to have, & cherish, are to her cat (named Black, of course), her love of vintage television, chocolate, goth stuff, music, & to her grandmother (who is unfortunately deceased).

My silly synopsis of My First Mister (2001):

Upon graduating high school, Jennifer seems to be a bit directionless (or so that say) & after getting fired from her job (for a hilarious reason), she is forced to find another one to support her lifestyle. Try after try, Jennifer is rejected from every single place she tries to apply to (OH NO, SPOOKY GOTH GIRL CANNOT POSSIBLY BE SUBJECTED TO "NORMAL" HUMANS, NOW CAN SHE?!) & ends up trying her luck at a haberdashery, after she spots Randall / R (a handsome, slightly pudgy man, who is played by the amazing Albert Brooks) in the store's window.

The two meet, & forge an unlikely (I hate that term) friendship that forever changes their lives.

I know that I typically offer commentary with my screen caps, but this time, I am going to let them speak for themselves.

(Note: I tried not to be too spoiler-y with my caps, but you know, shit happens.)

Death touched her lips to say goodbye & to always remember the man who touched her first, touched her with his heart. That is forever hers, my first mister. A man of few words. Life of more questions than answers. He awoken me my heart which beats stronger because of him & all that he has left me.

He-He-Hello: An Ode To Mary

The '90s gave me many female idols in music, television, fashion, & film & one of those idols was (& still is) the perfectly quirky, indie darling...

Miss Parker Posey.

Parker starred in TONS of films during the fantastic decade that was the '90s (Dazed & Confused, The House Of Yes, The Daytrippers, Clockwatchers, etc.) but it was her role as Mary (no last name) in Party Girl that made me fall in love with her.

Mary is a free-spirited young woman with a run-down New York apartment and a high fashion wardrobe. She calls her godmother, a librarian, for bail money after being arrested for throwing an illegal party. To repay the loan, she begins working as a library clerk. At first she hates it, but when challenged decides to master the Dewey Decimal System and become a great library clerk, while romancing a falafel vendor and helping her roommate in his goal to become a professional DJ.

I always liked Mary because it seemed she never had any idea where her life was going. Even at a young age, I identified with that. Still do, actually.

Mary had her heart in the right place, but needed to find direction in her life. Working as a clerk saved her. At least, it helped her figure out what she was capable of. Mary was always whip smart, she just never realized it. I guess, in a small way, it was because she didn't have much of a support system. As the movie progresses, she finds friendship (& love) among several people, & cuts ties with those who may be toxic in her life.

But let us not dwell on all of that heavy stuff.

Let's talk about Mary's awesome fashion sense!

The first outfit of the film. Not too wild about that little flappy thingy on her top, but I love the way it fits on her. However, the top has nothing on her glitter rainbow shorts & patterned pantyhose.

Red lips & gold heart necklace --even behind bars, Mary is a vision.

Mary makes her one phone call.

Every single thing about this outfit is perfect. My favorite pieces are her the coat, blouse, & pantyhose.

I adore her glasses, too.

I love the way her hair looks in this scene. Totally adore how it's pulled back & in a net.

I'd like to also point out the repeat use of this jacket. I love when TV shows & films repeat clothing.

I think Mustafa is telling Mary how much he hates her sweater. I'm kidding! Or am I?

I'm too tired to explain why Mary is dressed like this, but she looks very pretty.

Here is the moment when Mary takes control of her life & decides what she wants to do.

FAVORITE OUTFIT! EVERYTHING IS PERFECT! SWOON!

Mary has an important meeting with her aunt (who's coming over to Mary's apartment) but an impromptu surprise birthday party is thrown in Mary's honor.

Mary's godmother (whose name is Judy, by the way) arrives & Mary shows her that she can do anything she sets her mind to!

& of course, her godmother is super impressed.

So, everyone goes back to celebrating & getting down with their funky selves.

Mary will always be a party girl, but a new adventure is about to begin.

Eat Me, Beat Me: An Ode To Nora Diniro

It's no secret that I am obsessed with all things '90s.
As Leonard Cohen would say, everybody knows.

One of my favorite films from the '90s is Pump Up The Volume.

Christian Slater is the star of the show (& he shines brightly & beautifully, I might add) but it is Samantha Mathis who is out of this world as Nora Diniro.

Nora is effortlessly cool on all accounts. She is not only beautiful (short black hair, signature red lipstick, flawless skin, & hypnotizing blue eyes) but she is smart. She has the heart & mind of a poet. You can tell she's a creative soul (she writes & paints/draws) with a fiery spirit. She's a rebel in her own right. She doesn't necessarily play by the rules, but she doesn't go around breaking a bunch either. & did I mention her fantastic fashion sense? Oh have mercy!

Nora is the type of girl you want to as your best friend. Or maybe you just want to be her. Either way, Nora is the coolest girl & should be celebrated.

Nora's room is all sorts of cool. I'm pretty sure she did those drawings that are tacked onto her wall. Is that a coffee pot?

I love Nora's outfit here (black dress & vest for the win!) but her friend Janie (played by Lala Sloatman, who is a Zappa!) steals the show. I love her pink dress with that crazy tropical-ish top & scarf belt. & check out those peace sign bike shorts. So cute.

Hips Like Cinderella

On Saturday night (October 29th, 2011) I was supposed to see the Pixies at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, CT, however, Mother Nature had other plans for me. Her plans? Dumping massive amounts of snow on Connecticut (& most of the east coast) & making it nearly impossible to go outside. But, thankfully, the Pixies (who were in Waterbury & had done sound check) & the venue decided it was too risky to drive in such conditions, & rescheduled the show for Monday, October 31st.

HALLOWEEN!

What better way to spend your Halloween then with the Pixies?!

Last night was the show, & it was nothing short of amazingly fantastic.The venue, which I had never been to, was utterly gorgeous. Their bathrooms alone were a thing of beauty. The place looked like a opera house or something. Just beautiful. I was happy people showed up because I was afraid a lot of them wouldn't be able to attend the rescheduled date. But alas, they showed up & I was pumped.

On my way to the show, I was having a bit of anxiety, but once I was at the venue, it all melted away. People were dressed up in costumes (the venue & the band were having a contest for the best costume, & the prize was a meet & greet with the Pixies) & everyone seemed stoked to be there. I was feeling good vibes & wanted the show to start already.

My dude gave me my ticket & asked me if I realized where our seats were. I shook my head no. He handed me his iPhone (where a photo of the seating chart was on the screen) & I looked at my ticket, & then at the chart. "We're in the front row?" I asked. "Yeah, didn't you know that?" he said. I did not. I then became extra excited & nearly starting dancing in the lobby. I had no idea we had such great seats.

Surfer Blood were about to come on, so we made our way to the seats. Everyone at the venue (staff & concert goers) were super nice. The staff kept telling us what great seats we had, & one staff member dude complimented me on my Stooges shirt. I was really loving all of this niceness. I rarely get that at the shows I attend. When I got to my seat, I was FLOORED! They were practically on the stage. WOW!

Surfer Blood were good. I dug them. But honestly, I was so ready for the Pixies to come on, & when they did, IT WAS FUCKING FANTASTIC!

The band were amazing. They seemed like they were having fun (especially Kim!) & were in good spirits. They started off by playing about 4 or 5 B-Sides, & then ripping into Doolittle (playing everything in order, of course) with no remorse. After "Gouge Away", they left the stage for a rest & came back for their first encore. Much to my giddy delight, they played "Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf Mix)" & I lit up like a Christmas tree.

More B-Sides were played, another rest was had, & they returned to the stage for a second encore. This time, they came back & did a cover of Neil Young's "Winterlong", which was so lovely. After "Winterlong", Kim exclaimed they were going to do some songs from their "...other albums" & played: "Where Is My Mind", "Caribou", & "Gigantic". They then left the stage, for good, & I almost cried.

One of the best shows I have ever been to on one of the best Halloween's I have ever had.

It's been raining on & off for days. Everyone complains, but I don't. I like the rain. It calms me. It gives me a reason to stay in bed with loads of blankets & watch television, or listen to music.

Sometimes the rain inspires me to do something creative.

Most times, it just makes me lazy.

I am not particularly pretty. I do not possess that fantastical beauty that most people may have. This isn't to say I'm a monster, but lately I have been feeling so unattractive & old. Looking in the mirror only depresses me. I see all of these flaws that I have acquired throughout my 30 years of life, & instead of embracing them, I wish they would vanish into thin air.

Hopefully I will get over this feeling.

Here's a mish mash of a post!

A few weeks ago I saw Xiu Xiu in Hartford, CT.

The show was amazing (as always) & I got to meet the 2 newest members of the band, Zac & Sam. I also got to talk to Jamie (who remembered meeting my dude before) & gush about how much I loved the new songs they performed. I bought a good amount of merch & had a fun time in a new venue.

In case you were wondering, they opened with Bunny Gamer & closed with I Broke Up. They played a handful of new stuff that sounds totally amazing. Supposedly the new album should be released in February. Unfortunately, Angela was not there as she was back in school. What a bummer! But it was alright because it was so much fun to see Zac & Sam do their thing. I dig those dudes a lot.

I bought this radtastic button at the show.

I found it really awesome that it featured a black cat, as my cat happens to be black & is named Xiu Xiu.

During a few days off from work back in August (due to Hurricane Irene), I was bored at home & collaged the closet doors in my bedroom.

Tastes Like Love: Things I Am Currently Loving

Summer is gone!

Thank goodness, because quite frankly, I have never been a fan of Summer. Like most people these days, I love Autumn. The cool, crisp air sparks something inside of me that Summer could never achieve. Personally, I feel more creative during the cooler weather months. The heat of Summer stifles me & makes me lazy, but the cooler air of Autumn brings me hope & invigorates me.

Like always, I am completely in love with a million things at a time.

Here are a few things that are making my heart swell & ruling my world.

Oingo Boingo / Dead Man's Party

I have been playing this album on a constant loop. It makes me incredibly happy & it feels very Halloween-y to me. 'Tis the season, yes? Yes! Every song on here rules. I pretty much have a solo dance party to it every other day. Danny Elfman's voice makes me a happy gal.

Kat Dennings as Max in the CBS comedy, 2 Broke Girls

I love Kat. I have loved her since The 40 Year Old Virgin & think she's a great gal. Not only is she stunningly beautiful, but she makes me feel comfortable in my own skin. Kat is a curvy gal (which I am, too) & she doesn't apologize for it. She's also really funny & kind.

2 Broke Girls is only two episodes in, & so far, it seems to be doing fairly well. I like Kat's character Max & her sarcastic self, & I hope the show sticks around long enough to let the character's flesh out a bit. & I won't lie, Kat is super cute in her waitress outfit. Like, super duper cute.

I am an iced tea junkie. I love it & drink it almost every day. When my dude brought this delightful drink home, I was instantly hooked. Right now, it's my favorite iced tea (along with Snapple's Raspberry iced tea) & I've sworn to have it in my house at all times.

Who Charted? podcast on Earwolf

Who Charted? is a fun podcast hosted by Howard Kremer & Kulap Vilaysack.

(Howard, Mr. Zach G, & Kulap)

The premise of the podcast is simple: a guest is featured, & along with Howard & Kulap, they examine the charts. They take at look at the music & movie charts (counting down from 5 to 1) & discuss said charts with their guest. Hilarity usually ensues. Also fits of laughter & awkward pauses.

It's a very laid back podcast with a breezy fun feel. Howard & Kulap work very well with one another, & have a general upbeat attitude about life. It's always nice to hear the guests get into the charts & give their opinions on today's popular music & film.

I won't go into more detail (there's much more that I have not shared) about the show, just go listen to Who Charted? & laugh (or cringe!) forever.

Children's Hospital on Adult Swim

Children's Hospital is wrong. It's all sorts of wrong. So wrong.

& I love every minute of it.

Children's Hospital follows the lives & loves of a group of doctors who work at Children's Hospital in Brazil. Yeah, you read that right, Brazil. But it's obviously not Brazil, & that's kind of the inside joke.

& there's a clown doctor! I mean, do you need to know any more? Nope. Watch it.

I don't feel like I even to explain why I love this; I just do.

A gorgeous satin jacket, lots of blood, a killer soundtrack, fast cars, Christina Hendrinks, cool red riding gloves, Albert Brooks, beautiful cinematography, awkward silences, smiles, a cute kid, Bryan Cranston, fucked up scary ass masks, & best of all, Ryan Gosling.

While looking through my closet, I realized I had a good amount of band related tote bags, & I thought I would share them with you fine folk.

The dude bought this for me a few years ago at a MCD reunion show.

The dude also bought this for me at a Xiu Xiu show. I was unable to attend the show, so he bought this tote for me & had Jamie Stewart sign it. FYI: Our cat is named Xiu Xiu, so this tote is super hilarious to me.

I bought this Mika Miko tote at a Mika Miko/Erase Errata/Gossip show. Unfortunately, it was the first (& last) time I ever got to see the band.

Snagged this Erase Errata tote at the same show I wrote about above. I love the owl. I also have a t-shirt with the same image.

This Sonic Youth tote was a birthday present from the dude. I think it might have been given to me for an early 20 something birthday.

This wonderfully amazing Robert Smith tote was bought at a 2008 Cure show. It was an amazing night!

Radtastic Depeche Mode tote was at their 2009 tour. A magical night indeed!

Never Let a Lack of Talent Get You Down

So much has happened since I last posted here, & I want to share that here, but I am too lazy for that right now. I apologize for not updating properly. Actually, I deleted this blog this week, but then came back to undelete it. I thought my blogging days were over (& for the most part, they are) but I just cannot part with this blog. Most of the reason why I hadn't updated in forever was because of Tumblr.

Recently, I have deleted my Tumblr (formerly "tasteslikestatic" & then "tasteslikeneon) for the 4th & final time. I won't go into specifics (that is boring & pointless), but I am glad that I did. I have a love/hate relationship with that site, & quite frankly, I don't have time for complications. I feel free now & a bit less under the microscope. Of course, I am saying this while posting on a blog. Oh dear.

Anyway, expect more posts here very soon. They won't get too personal, but they will be chock full of things I am loving, reading, watching, etc. & I hope you will stick around to check it out. Thank you to old & new followers. I hope your Summer has been a good one.

Orion You Came & You Took All My Marbles by Kira Henehan

I started this book yesterday, & so far, I am enjoying it.

I cannot wait to see how the story unfolds.

Orion is very uniquely written (some chapters are only a few sentences, the phrasing is odd at times, etc.) & I sometimes find myself having to re-read certain sentences to actually retain it. This book will teach me to savor the material, as well as reading, more. Often times, I rush & read way too fast. What a bad habit!

My wonderful friend Jasmine must have some kind of psychic powers.

I had been itching to make some screen caps of the wonderful Czech New Wave film, Sedmikrásky (also known as Daisies) for quite some time now. I told myself that I would finally make some this weekend, & yesterday I received a lovely package from Jasmine. What perfect timing!

A few days earlier, she told me that she mailed me something, & that I would like it because I loved the film Daisies.

I stared reading this book today, & I am really enjoying it.

It's a short novel, so I have to pace myself & not gobble it up. I really loved the prologue. I almost xeroxed it to paste in one of my journals. Maybe I will do just that. I liked it so much even though it was quite sad, but also, quite beautiful.

I love Aimee Bender's writing so much.

The Doom Generation

Anyone who knows me, even a smidgen, knows that I'm totally gaga over 90's culture.
The music. The films. The fashion. The television.
All of it.

One of my most favorite films of the 90's is The Doom Generation.

I remember renting it from our local video store on the sly. I had seen the trailer for it on another video I rented, & became obsessed with wanting to watch it. Imagine my surprise when, just a few weeks later, The Doom Generation was on the shelf. I actually jumped up & down for a few seconds. After my freak out, I told myself to hold my composure long enough so that my mom could rent the video for me. She never questioned what I rented (I could rent Rated R stuff) & paid for the video for me. I was super stoked.

I didn't want to watch the movie (VHS, baby!) right away. I made myself wait for the perfect time. I sat on it for one night & watched it the next day. I had no patience whatsoever. I was too excited to see this weirdo film with its amazing soundtrack. Not to mention, three of the foxiest people I had ever seen.

I ended up watching it home (alone) & in my bedroom.

It really messed my head up...big time. I had to pause it a few times because I was like, "Um, I should I be watching this? Shit, mom is going to be so pissed that I rented this. Did he just do what I think he did? Oh gosh, they are really naked! Wow, Amy has the coolest clothes. Eep! Jordan is so hot. Eep! Xavier is so hot! 666?" & generally freaking out throughout the whole film.

I had never seen a movie like that in all of my 14 years of life. In some ways, it terrified me, but in other ways, it opened my eyes to things I have never seen or heard before. It opened up this door for me, & that door never closed again. After that, I got really hooked into seeing bizarre films (which seem totally normal now) & living in these bizarre little worlds.

It was fun. It was scary. It was sexy. It was strange.

It was repulsive. It was funny. It was sad.

So, here are a handful of screen caps I made from one of the first indie films I ever saw.

I didn't cap anything too spoiler-y or overtly sexy, nor did I cap the last 20 (or so) minutes of the film.

If I could, I would have capped the whole movie, but that would have been a bit much.

It's no secret that I adore Drew Barrymore.

I have loved her since I was a wee kid & will continue to love her until the end of time.

What a love about 90's Drew films, is that she seems to inject her real self in her characters.

The way they talk, their quirks, the films/music they love, & especially the way they dress. In Wishful Thinking, Drew's "Lena" was oozing real life Drewbie from every pore. Not since Mad Love (1995) had I seen so much of Drew in one of her characters.

I simply loved every outfit Drew wore in this film.

I also loved her apartment & how lovely it was decorated.

Bedroom Dancing

I am slowly decorating my new bedroom.

I was thinking about painting it, but I am far too lazy for that. I actually don't mind its current color (it's a particular shade of brown that I can't describe) & am quite fond of it. It has been a bit strange adjusting to non-minty green walls. Part of me wants to paint the bedroom green again, but part of me is unsure if I should do so. My minty walls were my favorite thing about my former apartment, but perhaps I should move on.

I am just really tired, nervous about this house stuff, exhausted from work, & overall being lazy bones about life. I am sure there will be TONS more stuff that makes me happy, but for now, this is all I got.

I saw the following GIF on Tumblr & got all excited because I own that Barbie's dress:

Here is my Blythe, Disco Lemonade, modeling said dress:

I know they don't look exactly alike, but I can assure you, it's the same dress.
Sometimes the same Barbie dress can differ in patterns & color placement.

There was really no point in this post other than wanting to use this awesome GIF, & show off one of my Blythe dolls.
